Welcome to Broome Shorthorns 
Broome is in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia.
• Situated on the banks of the Yanko Creek. 
• 300 poll shorthorn cows would (in a normal year) run on just over 1100 hectares (3330 acres). 
• Predominantly native pasture with 300 acres of irrigated pasture.
• Temperature ranges from 2°C ( 39°F) to up to 45°C (113°F)
• Average annual rainfall of 350 mm (14").

• Bred 3 National Champions (Dubbo Shorthorn Nationals)
• Was the first female to judge shorthorns at a royal show in Australia.
• She has three children David ('68), Wendy ('71) & Richard ('73)
• Managed Broome without paid help, other than her many dogs, the occasional visit from a vet, pregnancy tester or scanner necessary for performance recording, and the odd international work experience student.
• In 2003 David came back to the farm with his wife Terri and their family to assist.
• Gillian has been nominated for two Australian Rural Woman of the Year Awards.
• Nominated for a NSW Premier's senior achievement award in the Business Mentoring Category.

 

 
History of Broome Poll Shorthorn stud
• 1933 Purchase of 2 foundation yearling heifers from neighboring Lone Pine herd
• 1937 purchased a further 5 heifers also from Lone Pine
• 1945 purchased 7 more foundation yearling heifers and one stud heifer
• These original Lone Pine animals are the basis of the Broome Stud Herd:- 
                  Wynyard Wallflower (P)
                  Wynyard Wayward (P)
                  Wynyard Watermaid (P)
                  Wynyard Wheaton (P)

• To date only 15 other females have been introduced into the stud.
• Today there are 250 active females on the stud register (May2010)
• The Broome cow herd are all descendants of these 19 cows.
• 1998 saw an expansion into stud angus with the purchase of 4 foundation angus females these animals were later dispersed in 2006.
